Appearance
White or almost white, crystalline powder.
Solubility
Soluble in water, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent). When heated in the dry state or in solution, it gradually changes into sodium carbonate.IDENTIFICATION
A. To 5 ml of solution S add 0.1 ml of phenolphthalein solution. A pale pink colour is produced. Heat; gas is evolved and the solution becomes red.
B. It gives the reaction of carbonates and bicarbonates.
C. Solution S gives reaction of sodium.TESTS
Solution S
Dissolve 5.0 g in 90 ml of carbon dioxide-free water and dilute to 100.0 ml with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution
Solution S is clear and colourless.

The pH of freshly prepared solution S is not greater than 8.6

To a suspension of 1.0 g in 10 ml of distilled water add hydrochloric acid until neutral and dilute to 15 ml with distilled water.
