Monoethanolamine or MEA is used primarily for buffering or preparation of emulsions. Monoethanolamine can be used as pH regulator in cosmetics. Its primary use is for feedstock in the production of detergents, emulsifiers, polishes, pharmaceuticals, corrosion inhibitors, and chemical intermediates. It is also used for corrosion inhibitors, pharmaceuticals, textile auxiliaries, cosmetics and wood chemicals.

Monoethanolamine contains not less than 98.0 percent and not more than 100.5 percent, by weight, of C2H7NO.

Packaging and storage: Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers.
Identification: Infrared Absorption 197F.
Specific gravity: between 1.013 and 1.016.
Distilling range: Not less than 95% of it distills between 167 and 173, a correction factor of 0.052 per mm being applied as necessary.
Residue on ignition: not more than 0.1%.
Assay: Accurately weigh a glass-stoppered weighing bottle containing 25 mL of water. Add 1 g of Monoethanolamine, and weigh. Transfer to a suitable flask, add a mixed indicator of 5 parts bromocresol green and 6 parts methyl red for a total of approximately 11 parts of solution, mix, and titrate with 0.5 N hydrochloric acid. Each mL of 0.5 N hydrochloric acid is equivalent to 30.54 mg of C2H7NO.

Definition
Ethanolamine is 2-aminoethanol. It contains not less than 98.0% and not more than 100.5% of C2H7NO.

Characteristics
A clear, colourless or pale yellow liquid.
Miscible with water and with ethanol (96%); slightly soluble in ether.

Identification
A. To 0.1 mL add 0.3 g of picric acid and 1 mL of water and evaporate to dryness on a water bath. The melting point of the residue, after recrystallisation from ethanol (96%) and drying at 105C, is about 160C.
B. Distil, collect the second half of the distillate and allow to cool to room temperature. The second half of the distillate freezes at about 10C.
C. It is alkaline to litmus solution.

Refractive index: 1.453 to 1.459.
Weight per mL: 1.014 to 1.023 g.
Related substances: To pass the chromatography test. --- the sum of the contents of all the impurities is not more than 2.0% w/w.
