C. To 1 mL of solution S add 9 mL of water, 10 ;mL of dilute sulfuric acid and 30 mL of ammonium reineckate solution. A pink precipitate is formed. Allow to stand for 30 min. Filter and wash with water, with ethanol (96 per cent) and then with acetone and dry at 80C. The precipitate melts at 147C to 150C.TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 5.00 g in carbon dioxide-free water prepared from distilled water and dilute to 50.0 mL with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear and colourless.

L-Carnitine occurs as white crystals or as a white, crystalline, hygroscopic powder. It is freely soluble in water, in alcohol, in alkaline solutions, and in dilute mineral acids. It is practically insoluble in acetone and in ethyl acetate. It decomposes without melting at about 185C to 195C.

Assay: Not less than 97.0% and not more than 103.0% of C7H15NO3, calculated on the anhydrous basis.
Identification:
A. Dissolve about 1 g of sample in 10 mL of water and 10 mL of 1 N hydrochloric acid, and add 5 mL of sodium tetraphenylborate. A white precipitate forms.
B. The infrared absorption spectrum of a potassium bromide dispersion of the sample, previously dried in vacuum at 60C for 5 h, exhibits maxima only at the same wavelengths as those of a similar preparation of USP Levocarnitine Reference Standard.
Chloride: Not more than 0.4%.
Lead: Not more than 1 mg/kg.
Optical (Specific) Rotation: [α]D20°: Between –29.0° and −32.0°, calculated on the anhydrous basis.
