Hydrochlorothiazide or Hypothiazide is a prescription thiazide diuretic ("water pill") used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and fluid retention (edema) associated with heart, kidney, or liver disease. It works by removing excess salt and water from the body through increased urine, helping to lower blood pressure. Other uses include treating diabetes insipidus and renal tubular acidosis and decreasing the risk of kidney stones in hypercalciuria.

Appearance: White, or practically white crystalline powder.
Odor: Practically odorless.
Assay: 97.5% minimum.
Melting Point: 266C to 268C or 273C to 275C literature.
Solubility: Very slightly soluble in water, soluble in acetone, sparingly soluble in ethanol (96 per cent). It dissolves in dilute solutions of alkali hydroxides.

CHARACTERS

D. Gently heat about 1 mg with 2 mL of a freshly prepared 0.5 g/L solution of chromotropic acid, sodium salt in a cooled mixture of 35 volumes of water and 65 volumes of sulfuric acid. A violet colour develops.
TESTS
Acidity or alkalinity: Shake 0.5 g of the powdered substance to be examined with 25 mL of water for 2 min and filter. To 10 mL of the filtrate, add 0.2 mL of 0.01 sodium hydroxide and 0.15 mL of methyl red solution. The solution is yellow. Not more than 0.4 mL of 0.01 M hydrochloric acid is required to change the colour of the indicator to red.
Related substances: To pass the test by Liquid chromatography.
Chlorides: Maximum 100 ppm.
Loss on drying: Maximum 0.5 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 105C.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
